The exciting role of the medical scribe is to assist Physicians and APPs at the bedside to
document a patient visit from start to finish. Medical scribes use a laptop to document in the
EMR during the interaction between the provider and patient. Scribes are at the hip of the
provider for their entire shift, viewing the entire medical decision-making process
while assisting in the documentation and other clerical tasks that the provider may have.
Scribes are exposed to many elements of the hospital, including provider interactions, nursing
staff, and health administration. It is a valuable experience for all pre-health individuals, not just
pre-med or pre-PA.
All Scribes employed by Helix Scribe Solutions go through free employment training through the
GVSU Scribe Academy (non-GVSU students are welcome to apply). The training includes 20
hours of online-based theory training and 40-60 hours of clinical training in
the specialty location at which you will be working. After successful completion of clinical
training, employment with Helix Scribe Solutions is offered.
Working at a specialty location has many unique perks compared to other medical scribes. First,
it allows more frequent and personalized interactions with providers. Because you are working
with a small group of providers, the likelihood of you working with the same one are very high.
Working at a specialty location also allows you to watch many procedures that are not
performed elsewhere. Lastly, along with an increased hourly rate ($12/hr), specialty scribes
only work business hours and will not be scheduled to work weekends or holidays.
This is a great position for pre-health students who want to stand out among their peers when
applying to graduate health programs. You will gain valuable patient contact hours, the
opportunity to receive professional recommendations from providers, as well as a greater
sense of confidence and understanding of the complex healthcare system. The training and
work schedule are ideal for current students with a lighter workload or who recently graduated
during their gap year.
